It all depends on what you need “self help” for, so I can’t really suggest too many websites, because most of them are specific to the situation and circumstances.

However, here are some good self help tips:

1. Writing really helps you get your feelings out, and no one ever has to know what you wrote. Write about what’s bothering you, what you wish you could do about it, etc.
2. Research your problem. A library is a great place to go because you can borrow the books, and/or make photocopies or take notes. Don’t be ashamed of whatever it is you’re looking up – you can always just say you’re writing a research paper if anyone asks (but chances are they won’t!) Learning about how other people dealt with the same problem as you will give you some ideas.
3. Decide a few ways to overcome your problem – for example, if you are feeling depressed – what things make you feel happy? Try thinking of ways you can control the problem and change your attitude and behavior towards it.
4. Lastly, remember you don’t have to do everything on your own. If you don’t have anyone close to you to talk to, call an anonymous hotline (usually can find them in the front of the phone book) or if you have insurance, you can probably talk to a professional if need be for no or low cost, depending on your benefits. There are many problems that no amount of self-help could even scratch the surface on (such as suicide, alcoholism, drug addiction, manic depression, schizophrenia, etc.) However, if you are just going through the usual ups and downs of life, writing and learning how others dealt with it usually will help you gain some insight on tackling it on your own.

What are the “symptoms” of ADD or ADHD?

Question by bluekitty8098: What are the “symptoms” of ADD or ADHD?
I had parent/teacher conferences last night and my son’s teacher brought up the fact the she believes he may have ADHD. She has been teaching for twenty-four years, so I believe she may have some experience with the illness (yes, I believe it IS an illness). She reccomended that I take him to our family doctor and I have already made the appoinment, but he can’t be seen until early Dec. He is 7 yrs old and a very bright child, but has problems focusing, is very rambuctious, has problems following directions (if told to do two things he can do one, but gets distracted before doing number two, etc.), he talks excesivly sometimes just blurts things out rather then waiting for the appropriate time, among other things. I don’t believe it to be a disipline issue, we have tried everything (his father and I) from time outs, taking privlages, and even spankings on the rare occasion. I was just wondering what the symptoms are and what sort of test do they run to diagnose something like this.
Sorry, I misspoke, disorder, not illness – got it (lol) see, I’m learning. What are the common treatments, I know medications, but anything else?

That sounds just like my nephew and hes is 9 and has ADHD. Im not sure what tests they do but my nephew is now on medication and i can see the difference. Last year he was getting suspended constantly for his behaviour and since being treated he has not been suspended once. I admit though i think there are other stategies that should be taken before medicating. There are quite a few places that run programs for parents dealing with ADHD and ADD check your local community for such programms and take to doctor

Help with my cutting?

Question by Liz: Help with my cutting?
Well I cut a lot but they aren’t bad and I cut because of my dad. He is very emotionally abusive when it comes to me but my sister is the perfect child in his eyes. My one friend knows about my cutting because she cuts too. I am afraid to tell my other friends because they always make fun of the other girl behind her back. I am also afraid to tell my parents please don’t suggest getting help. It is an addiction that I have. I need ways to stop as well. I just cut and I haven’t for 2 weeks until now. My parents are divorced and my dad yells at me all the time when I’m at his house and when I’m at my moms house he still has this control over me and calls all the time to yell at me over the phone. He needs someone to pick on my brother doesn’t live with him because he was abused by my dad and how many more kids does he have to lose before he realizes he hurts. I cry all the time. The cutting is getting worse and I don’t know how much longer I can hide it. I can’t live with my mom until I’m 14 and I’m only 12 my mom had to go to court for my brother

Visit blackdogtribe.com for online support.. Also if ur selfesteem is very low right now. U need to find ways to improve it, look online for tips. Also try learning and doing new things; start small and this will give u a sense of achievement. .. Visit yourlifeyourvoice.org to talk to a free online councellor.. Look up exercise and depression online it releases endorfins which improve mood and brain chemistry. and Art Therapy; channelling what ur feeling into something creative helps ur brain process the negativity in ur head: a good technique is to doodle when thinking about the things that depress u, doodling brings ur thoughts into the present and stops u dwelling on the things that depress u. also find some volunteer work; helping others or nature builds selfesteem, gives life new meaning gives perspective and good karma… u dont have to believe in god but finding some spirituality can really help and good karma is a good start… basically research all u can on depression then when u find things that help come on here and share with the other deprrssed people, more good karma. Why not join clubs groups and activities in ur community where you ll meet like minded people. Or challenge urself by joining groups u wouldnt normally be interested in.  good luck and dont be afraid of going to ur doctor, be totally honest and they ll understand and be able to help; medication or a change of medication can work wonders, like lifting a weight from ur shoulders.
