Question by jas ?: What is the song “Katie” by Missy Higgins about?
I am singing it in singing lessons and my teacher asked me to look up what it was about so I could connect with the song more.

I just think of it as a very metaphorical song. I don’t think Katie is necessarily a “little girl,” it seems to me like she’s an adolescent and is referred to as a little girl because she feels and seems so small in the hugeness of life and the world. She’s going through difficulties that are also so much bigger than her, and she says she’ll find a way through without knowing how.

Then she finds some form of self-destructive behaviour. The first thing I thought of was drugs, but it could be alcohol, anorexia, depression – it doesn’t really matter. She refuses to accept that it’s a problem (“you see I have control over me” – her addiction isn’t controlling her, in her eyes.)

And then it’s asking, will you realize what you’re doing and stop? There are people trying to help you and you won’t accept it, won’t get help (“turn a blind eye to all the faces that you know, and she said Go.”)
